THE WINEMAKER: Willy Lunn

Willy’s childhood in a small farming community in rural South Australia started his passionate affinity for the land started, and subsequently led him to develop a passionate belief the ultimate expression in wine was being able to ‘capture that unmissable sense of place’ that conveys where a wine is from. Joining the famous Petaluma winery, and under the watchful eye of industry legend, Brian Croser, straight out of high-school as a cellar hand was the formal start of a winemaking journey that has now taken him from the Adelaide Hills to the Yarra Valley, via an oenology degree and a life-changing adventure with sparkling wine in Oregon that took from Willamette to the White House!

It is a significant development for Yering Station that Willy has now taken over the role as Chief Winemaker, thereby marking a new, exciting chapter for the Rathbone family’s journey in the wine industry and the evolution of their regionally-acclaimed wines. Willy’s leadership hallmark is an ability to foster a strong team spirit throughout a winery, and the commitment to accept no compromise in the ultimate pursuit of quality.

The bold architectural vision, the sweeping panoramic views of the Yarra Valley, and the modern destination restaurant do little to convey the truth that this outstanding property has very humble beginnings as the region’s first vineyard site. Today, the award-winning Yering Station is one of the Yarra Valley’s international elite, having been recognized around the world as one of Australia’s leading estates, and a winery capable of delivering excellence across a range of styles that comprises: Yarrabank vintage sparkling wine made in collaboration with the famous Champagne house, Devaux; structured and complex reserve Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; and a new modern classic in the guise of a reserve Shiraz-Viognier blend.
