Christoph Künzli went to Boca in 1988. Tasted Antonio Cerri’s Boca and loved the terroir and wanted to purchase Cerri’s winery. Cerri, ~80 years old at the time, eventually agreed. Le Piane “BOCA HOLDING AG” was formed in 1998
Colline Novaresi Rosso DOC (can use 85-100% croatina – “Bonarda”). 90% Croatina, 5% Nebbiolo, Vespolina and other local varieties. “Our contribution to the new interpretation and refining of the traditional grape variety.”
The very best old vineyards, up to 100 years old (La Maggiorina) , ~500m. 2 years in 500l tonneaux (20% new) and large Slavonian oak. ~4000 bottles
Croatina can be rustic; fruity, deep color, somewhat tannic, similar to Dolcetto. “Very deeply coloured… Dark cherries but also has a savoury character. Dry and dusty fine tannins, northern-Rhône Syrah style”
